Who manages access

Public boating access areas around Lake Norman are operated by agencies including the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Duke Energy, and county parks departments. A park near the lake is not necessarily a boat-access facility, and the two can be separately managed.

Before you go

  • Check the operator's official page for current hours and closures.
  • Confirm parking and trailer capacity.
  • Confirm fees, if any.
  • Never use a private community dock as a public facility.

Paddlers and swimmers

Kayaks and paddleboards make the lake accessible without a boat, but launching rules vary by facility. Some public areas welcome paddlers. Others are built for trailers and ask hand-launchers to use a separate area. Swimming is restricted at many access areas. Check the operator's posted rules, wear a life jacket, and stay visible to powerboats, especially in busy channels on summer weekends.

Respect private shoreline

Much of the Lake Norman shoreline borders private property. Use designated public areas, and never land at or tie up to private docks without permission.
