Marina slips versus community slips

A marina slip is usually a lease with a commercial operator. A community slip depends on association rules. A private dock depends on a permit. Each has different costs, waitlists, and transfer rules.

Boater education

North Carolina requires boater education for certain operators of motorized vessels. Check the Wildlife Resources Commission for current requirements.

Questions for any marina

  • Is the slip a seasonal or annual lease, and how is renewal handled?
  • Is there a waitlist, and how long is it?
  • What size boat fits, and what depth can you count on at low water?
  • Are fuel, pump-out, and service available?
  • What are the insurance requirements?

Safety on busy weekends

Summer weekends bring heavy boat traffic to Lake Norman's main channels. Know the navigation rules, keep proper distance from docks and swimmers, and carry required safety equipment.
